This oval serving dish is made by hand from a rich, red earthenware clay. Terra sigillata (a very fine particle slip) is applied to the surface and burnished before the initial firing. The effect is a smooth, soft skin-like surface with a low sheen.
The embossed interior of the bowl and the underside are then glazed with a glossy glaze to contrast the satin finish of the rim and foot.
